Through our website, we are opening GFF to the world-wide-web, to our sponsors, future donors and other QPHS alumni classes where they can read and contact us about the foundation, about the scholarship grant we are offering, and about our scholars. And most of all, this is also our boundless means of expressing our gratitude to all the generous people who are supporting our cause; and like us, also believe that this scholarship project will truly make a difference in some young people’s future. This is our legacy, a useful and meaningful assistance we can ever offer to the young and deserving graduates of our Alma Mater, Quezon Provincial High School, with God’s blessings.

The Conception of Good Friends Foundation
By Levita M. Llave & Minda Vega-Huvalla
When one throws a stone into a peaceful lake, waves are created and a disturbance is started that spreads out in circle in all directions. This is the closest parallelism we could think of in describing how our scholarship foundation evolved. But we did not create an annoying disturbance as the little stone we threw created the awareness that later developed into a commitment and desire to be a part of a group that advocates a worthy cause.
Setting up a foundation was not an easy task. It was an uphill climb, though its conception was not an original idea. In the Philippines, in July 1999, the initial reactions of some of our batch mates to revive the previous Class’71 scholarship foundation were unfavorable. But that did not discourage us from pursuing what our proponents, Maynard Manila and some other batch mates, believed in. The best way to help the needy high school graduates in charting their future is through a college scholarship program. The recipients would be chosen from the financially deserving and scholastically qualified graduates of our alma mater, Quezon Provincial High School, now Quezon National High School. With that in mind and driven by a strong determination to make the project work, we started to round up batch mates we know who live in USA, Canada and across Europe. Our appeal was for each member to pledge an annual support of US$120 or CAN$150. The response was amazing. In the Philippines, the membership also started to grow with each member pledging PHP 1,000 a year. When the contributions started coming in December1999, we knew then that the hard work has paid off. And so the Scholarship Screening Committee was formed among our Philippines members.
It was not only the wholehearted financial commitment of the members that energized the organization of this new scholarship foundation. The active participation of the majority with their suggestions, ideas from other scholarship grants, as well as their arguments and agreements shaped our scholarship guidelines and selection criteria for the scholars.
